This building is historically important for its place in helping to guide ships into Geraldton harbour over 100 years ago. It differs from later lighthouses in having the tower for the light attached to living quarters for the light keeper and his family, rather than separate structures. Despite some unsympathetic work on the building its original character could be restored. It is held in esteem locally and is used as headquarters for the Geraldton Historical Society.
Erected in 1876 the building consists of a rectangular tower for the light with attached rooms which served as the light keeper's living quarters. All have walls of limestone with corrugated iron roof and a verandah across the front. A timber lean-to at the rear contains added facilities for bathroom etc, not included in the assessment.

Butterabby Graves is an undisturbed archaeological site. No visible physical structure of the hut remains, though there is evidence in change of soil surface texture to suggest the hut’s location. This corresponds to the area marked out by eight marker stones. Some grave marker stones were temporarily moved in the 1970s, but the contents of the graves remain undisturbed. The graves, being located on a small rise in the ground suffer from wind and water erosion, and there is concern that due to the shallow depths of the graves, skeletal remains could become uncovered.

Constructed from 1865
Butterabby Graves has considerable historic value as a place which provides evidence of the attempted resistance by Aboriginal peoples to the spread of European pastoral expansion inWestern Australia. The execution and burial of the five Aboriginal people is an example of Colonial Government policies to deter indigenous resistance and as such provides evidence of the treatment of Aboriginal people under colonial law. Further the place is representative of isolated graves in rural WA.
Located approximately 16km south of Mullewa and 1.8km west of the Mullewa-Mingenew Road and set on a low hill is the site of the Buttterabby Graves which includes three random rubble grave mounds (1864/5), a large granite memorial stone (1973) and a shelter shed (c2001). All three graves consist of low randomly placed plies of rocks. The memorial stone is a distinctive rock, standing on end, one edge rounded and the other concave with a carved inscription on a flat surface that reads as follows: "In these graves lie JAMES RUDDspeared here at Butterabby, 23 September 1864. Also GARDER, WANGAYAKOO, YOURMAGARRA, CHARLACARRA, WillA CARRA, natives sentenced in Perth and hanged here 28 Jan 1865 for the spearing of THOMAS BOTT at Butterabby 22 Aug 1864." Nearby is a small flat roofed timber framed hut clad with corrugated iron to the west and lattice to the north and south, while being open to the eastern end. Inside an interpretive sign is affixed to the internal wall. There is no evidence of the tree on which the men were hanged
In the late 1850s pastoralists commenced extending their leaseholdings eastwards from the Champion Bay region for the purposes of grazing their stock during the summer months. One such pastoralist, John S Davis of Tibradden, took up pastoral leases to the east at Kockatea, Wooderarrung and Mullewa Spring. During the early 1860s there had been minor skirmishes recorded in the vicinity between the local aboriginal peoples and white settlers, mainly shepherds, over land, watering holes and grazing stock. However the situation escalated with the spearing of John Lewis, a shepherd of Davis', at Kockatea Spring on 17 February 1864. The culprit was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment at Rottnest Gaol. However, at the time the Champion Bay Resident Magistrate noted in his report to the Colonial Secretary that a strong deterrent would be for death sentences to be carried out on the spot the murder was committed. Meanwhile James Rudd, a tormer Conditional Pardon man took up a pastoral lease at Butterabby, about 6kms west of Kockatea, where he was assisted by Thomas Batt, a ticket-ot-Ieave man. On 22 August 1864, Bott was attacked by 8 Aboriginal men and, although taken into the Chapion Bay Depot Hospital he subsequently died of his injuries. Not long afterwards, Rudd was attacked by a small group of Aboriginals and killed. Meanwhile Constable Watson arrested 5 Aboriginal men in relation to the first killing. The prisoners were shipped to Perth for their trial where they were found guilty of the murder of Bott and sentenced to death. The prisoners were escorted back to Butterabby where a small crowd of twelve aboriginal people witnessed the hanging executions of the five men from a nearby tree on 28 January 1865. The bodies were buried at the site. The authorities hoped that the witnesses would communicate with their people about what had occurred and it would deter any future attacks. With closer agricultural settlement occurring in the Mullewa District in the early 1900s, the land on which Butterabby Graves is situated was taken up by John Keeffe in 1912 as Victoria Location 1920. Since then the property has been further subdivided and has changed hands a number of times within the same family. The memorial stone was erected on the site by Bert Keeffe in 1973. Listed as an Aboriginal Site in May 1975, in recent years a small shelter shed was erected on the site for the convenience of visitors.

The original Masonic Lodge building is a fine, unique example of a style of architecture still practised in Australia in the early twentieth century and identified in the Municipal Inventory as Victorian Georgian or Regency style. (refer Apperley, Irving and Reynolds.) The building is a rare example of the style and one of only a few such examples of Masonic Lodges still extant. The place makes an important aesthetic contribution to the streetscape with its fine proportions and walls of exposed local stonework and distinctive porch with classical motifs. The place has significant historical associations with the development and evolution of the local community and the growth of a major country town in Western Australia. It represents an important part of the evolution of the district and has had a long association with the local community through its social connections with the leading citizens and businessmen of the town . The building's aesthetic, historic and social values are clearly appreciated by the community. AESTHETIC VALUE The exterior of the original building is a fine, well preserved example of the Victorian style of architecture still practised in Australia at the beginning of the twentieth century and identified by Apperly, Irving and Reynolds as Victorian Georgian or Regency. The style includes such character istic indicators as a symmetrical frontage of exposed stonework with expressed quoins and string course, medium pitch roof and close boxed eaves. The building's facade has been well maintained and the original stonework is intact and can also be seen along the sides and rear of the building. The aesthetic characteristics exhibited by the building are clearly valued by the community as evidenced by its inclusion in the Municipal Inventory. (Criteria 1.1 & 1.2) Because of its distinctive style and presence the building has significant cultural heritage environment. landmark qualities and helps to create a (Criterion 1.3) HISTORIC VALUE The place has significant historical associations with the development and evolution of the local community and the growth of a major country town in Western Australia. It represents an important part of the evolution of the district and has had a long association with the local community through its connections with the leading citizens and businessmen of the town.
The two-storey stone Masonic Lodge building is a fine example of what is classified by Apperly Irving and Reynolds as Victorian Georgian or Regency style 1 although its construction post-dates this period. It is, however, quite typical of the style of building constructed for Freemasons' Halls/Temples built throughout the State in the early part of the twentieth century and through to the commencement of the Second World War. The front elevation of the building, constructed of local stone, is the original and oldest part of the structure. There are later additions extending to the rear, the latest of which are of brick construction on the first floor over an earlier stone ground floor. (refer §4 -Hist. overview) The medium pitch, hipped roof is of corrugated asbestos. The front entry porch, which is a later addition is in a typical Masons' Greek temple theme with rendered mouldings forming a frieze and triangular pediment featuring Masonic symbol, supported on fluted Doric columns to form the entry po11ico. The original entry was at the side and the opening is still visible in the stone wall externally , and intemally in the plaster. The symmetrical front has larger stone quoins at the comers and plain rendered mouldings surround the windows. A thin horizontal stone string course expresses the floor level between storeys. The wooden sash windows are four paned, with slightly arched heads. The internal planning is, typically, a social hall on the ground floor and Masonic temple on the first floor. This arrangement is reflected in each stage of the additions. The current layout uses the ground floor of the original building as an entry foyer to give access to a much larger social hall, amenities and kitchen facilities than the original. This entry hall has a timber stair leading to the first floor ceremonial spaces. The stair has an obtrusive security screen built across it that should be sympathetically modified or removed. The original first floor temple is now an anti-chamber to the 1934 temple addition built of brick over the earlier, larger, stone social hall below. The blue painted, simple plastered walls are relieved by white rendered plaster columns forming a pilastered effect which culminates at a ceremonial portico, in the Greek temple style, at each end of the hall. The floor features the Mason's ceremonial, black and white chequered pattern , also now featured in the front porch. As with the hall below, the original ceiling has been obscured by a new suspended ceiling that is out of keeping with the style and age of the place.
Assessment 2003 Consruction: 1892 Alterations/additions: 1921, 1934 The Geraldton Masonic Lodge was consecrated on 18th October 1877 and members met in a variety of locations until the present site was acquired in 1892. (see §6.- History) A hall had been constructed for the Masons in 1878 but was on y leased to them and proved to be too expensive. The foundation stone of this Masonic Hall, also known as Central Hall, was laid on 9 November, 1878 by Wor. Bro. Timperly. This stone is now on display in the foyer of the present Masonic Lodge building, as that hall has since been demolished. When the financial situation of the Lodge improved, it was decided that a new home was needed, and in February, 1892, the present site was leased from Bro. Jose for a period of 25 years at a yearly rental of £ I . On 27 February, 1900 the Geraldton Lodge separated from the English Constitution and became Geraldton Lodge No. 3 of the W.A.C -the third oldest in the state behind the Lodge of St. John (Perth) and Fremantle.2The original stone festive room on the Augustus Street site had an ea11hem floor. In 1910, seven years before the termination of the lease, the property was purchased by the Lodge for the sum of £600. Gradually improvements were made to the building, however over time the accommodation became cramped, and in addition some members were concerned about the condition of the Temple on the upper floor, especially the wrought iron staircase which gave access to it. (This staircase was removed and is now believed to be located at the Mission to Seamen building). As a result, a new Lodge room was constructed extending the original building to the rear and this was opened in early 1921. The "new" Lodge Temple, complete with the additional brick upper storey and remodelling of the original section at a total cost of £3,600 was opened on 24111 June, 1934. In 1850, the first town Jots of the area, surveyed by A.C.Gregory, were sold at an average price of £34, an amount equivalent to a year's wages for an unskilled labourer at that time. In June 1851, the settlement was gazetted as the town site of "Geraldton" and quickly developed as a fishing port and outlet for the produce of the surrounding district. On 17'h November, 1876 a meeting was convened in Geraldton by Bro. George Baston Sen., one of the pioneers of the town, to consider the steps necessary for the formation of a Masonic Lodge. Meetings were held in the upper storey of a warehouse known as Grays and Co, with the result that in just under a year, the consecration of the new Lodge took place on 1811 October, I 877. Henry Gray, one of the owners of the warehouse, became a member of the Lodge and it became Lodge No. 1683 on the Register of the Grand Lodge of England. The first meeting of the Lodge members took place on 25th October, 1877 -just one week after the consecration. A more fitting home for the Geraldton Masonic Lodge was decided upon, and the Masonic Hall, also known as Central Hall, but which is no longer extant, was constructed for the Lodge. The foundation stone of this Lodge was laid on 9th November, 1878 by Wor. Bro. Timperly and on 1st April, 1880 the Lodge was dedicated for Masonic purposes by the Rev. Bro. B.M. King. Although it carried the name of "Masonic Hall'', the bu ilding was never owned by the Geraldton Lodge. Rather it was held on lease for 99 years at the rental of £ I00 per annum Constance Norris describes the Masonic Hall as being - "...next to the West Australian Bank, standing a long way back so that carriages could draw up infront. ft had an imposing entrance with pillared porch and steps ... "4 However, it was soon found that the rental for this hall was too great an expense and the Lodge moved from the hall for a time to a room made available at the Club Hotel.5 When the financial situation of the Lodge improved, it was decided that a new home was needed, and in February, 1892, the present site was leased from Bro. Jose for a period of 25 years at a yearly rental of £1. Then in 1910, seven years before the termination of the lease, the property was purchased by the Lodge for the sum of £600. The foundation stone of the Central Hall, which has since been demolished, is now on display in the foyer of the present Masonic Lodge building. On 27th February, 1900 the Geraldton Lodge separated from the English Constitution and became Geraldton Lodge No. 3 of the W.A.C -the third oldest in the state behind the Lodge of St. John (Perth) and Fremantle.6 The early Masonic Lodges in order of consecration are as follows: - St. John's Lodge, Perth; Fremantle; Geraldton; Wellington, Bunbury; York (23.5. 1886); St. George's Lodge, Pe11h; Perth; Perth; Roeboume (relocated to Karratha); Albany (189 1). On I01h November, 1927 Geraldton Lodge No. 3 celebrated its Golden Anniversary and in 1977 the Lodge celebrated it's the Centenary of its consecration

Rosella House, a single storey timber framed building with rough cast render and corrugated iron roof sheeting, has cultural significance for the following reasons: the place has aesthetic importance as the building is an elegant derivative of the Arts and Crafts Style created in unusual materials in the Western Australian context; the place has historic significance as the building reflects the stages of development in health care in Geraldton and the State; the place has historic association with the eminent early Western Australian architect J. Herbert Eales, and association with Dr J. McAleer, eminent local doctor, and later Mayor of Geraldton; and the place is of social significance as it has serviced the area since 1.911 and contributes to the community's sense of place. Aesthetic Value Rosella House reflects an unusual design of aesthetic value fitting well within the Arts and Crafts Style philosophy and demonstrates solutions to health care ideals held at the time. The design of Rosella House is an elegant derivative from the Arts and Crafts Style created in unusual materials in the Westem Australian context. Rosella House, through its sympathetic design and physical relation with the old Geraldton Hospital , forms part of an important setting collectively. Historic Value Rosella House has historic value as a model of a specially built private hospital, and has high value as an example of the early building methods and style. Rosella House has importance for its association with eminent Western Australian architect J. Herbert Eales, and its association with Dr J. McAleer, eminent local doctor, and later Mayor of Geraldton. Social Value The place has social value in the context of the place and contributes to the community's sense of place. The location of Rosella House to the former District Hospital is a valuable link in the story of public and private medicine. Rarity Rosella House has rarity value as one of the remaining small private hospitals of its time that has not been surrounded or substantially altered by developments or changes in practice. The original planning is evident and exhibits the principles of private health care of the time. The construction method of the building has rarity value. The timber framing and rough cast walling was a technique rarely used for whole buildings in Western Australia. Rosella House is representative of the type of building and time. The evidence of the original planning demonstrates the design philosophy of a small private hospital of the early Twentieth century. The design of Rosella House represents an example of the 'Nightingale Ward' modified by the influence of the climatic environment and the building style
Condition Generally the condition of the building is good having been recently restumped, reroofed with corrugated iron and general repairs made to the internal joinery. Integrity Externally and internally the integrity of Rosella House is moderate, despite the changes in use none of the various occupants have significantly altered the place and the original form is apparent.2 Authenticity Externally Rosella House has a moderate level of authenticity due to the replacement of the roof sheeting, fibrous cement additions and the removal of some walls and infilling of original openings. The authenticity of the interior is high, with the original plan being clearly discernible.

Historically John C Hawes was an Australian Missionary besides being a priest/architect. Architecturally interesting. An artist's idea in stone of some of the best samples if many architectural styles. The largest and most important of a group of churches designed, and in some cases built, by Monsgr Hawes in the Geraldton Diocese. As a group they display an eclectic style, personal to Hawes and are both architecturally and liturgically significant. Hawes was a qualified architect before he bacame a priest.
Stone building. Spanish Colonial variation of the baroque. Many periods of architecture represented - huge dome - resembles that of Florence Cathedral and also covers octagonal space between nave and chancel; while round windows in octagon wall resemble those in Florence Cathedral. Octagon twin dome towers at west end are Spanish Californian. Great central portal is French Romanesque. Round arches of the nave are supported on squat, unfluted bulky columns - 11th century English Romanesque. Zebra striping on walls and arches like those in Siena in Italy. Early renaissance canopied pulpit. Immense gothic crucifix behind large domed tabernacle.
Assessment 1973 Date of Construction: Foundation stone laid June 20 1916, opened for worship Aug 28, 1938 Architect Monsgr J.C. Hawes

The building is interesting as an example of the work of an early architectural firm. It has been an important social centre in Geraldton for over 70 years, being used for dances, plays, concerts and civic functions. It is typical of the large civic halls erected at the period and is one of the few remaining important buildings of Geraldton's early years.
Designed by Odham & Cox and erected in 1907 the town hall is a stuccoed classical style rectangular building with asbestos roof and wooden floors. It was built to accommodate 1100 people, 700 in the body of the hall and 400 in the galleries. It has been unaltered over the years and is in sound condition apart from the need for normal maintenance. It is listed as Grade 1 in the Schedule of Significant places in Geraldton in the Northampton Dongara Geraldton Survey by Feilman & Associates funded by the National Estate.

• The building has high aesthetic significance for its style, rarity and contribution to the Geraldton townscape. • The place is significant as part of the history of the RSL in Geraldton and Western Australia. • It has a significant association with the social and cultural values of the Geraldton community as the meeting place and focal point for the RSL and the Anzac Services. • The condition of the building and the War Memorial is excellent and they are well maintained by the owner, whose values will sustain the integrity of the building. and keep the fabric in its original state.
Birdwood House stands, in association with the War Memorial, at a prominent intersection in the town centre. It is a simple, rectangular brick building with a gable end and corrugated asbestos roof. The front facade has rendered mouldings, parapet and entablature supported on precast concrete columns forming a classical entry porch. The lower section of the front wall remains in unrendered red brickwork as are the side walls except for rendered lintels over windows. The front facade provides a dignified entry and good mannered contribution to the streetscape in the style of the Inter-war Georgian Revival or Free Classical period. There are some elements of Art Deco about the detailing in leadlight glass to the entry doors (and formerly the front windows now replaced with plain glass), internal cornices and ceiling decoration. The plan is relatively simple with administration , meeting rooms and ladies retiring room at the front. Behind these is the large function room. Further extensions for kitchens and toilets have been carried out at the rear.
Assessment 2000 Construction 1935 Architect/designer: Tom Roberts Builder: A Cruthers On the 25th April 1917 a branch of the Returned Soldiers Association (later the Returned Services League) was formed in Geraldton with Captain W. C. Robinson of the 10th Light Horse as the first President. The RSA held its first Anzac Day Service on 25th April 1918. Before Birdwood House was built services were held in the Town Hall and later on in Lester Square, then subsequently in the grounds of Birdwood House.1 The Association was housed in the old Institute in Marine Terrace for several years but the League wanted more suitable accommodation and a fitting memorial for those who died in the First World War. A site was selected on the corner of Eleanor (now Chapman Road) and Forrest Street. Built in 1935 Birdwood House was designed by Mr. Tom Roberts and erected by the builder Mr. A. E. Crothers. The War Memorial located in the forecourt of Birdwood House was also built in 1935, by Wilson, Gray & Co., of polished granite with stone crosses and banding and brass memorial plaques and inscriptions2 They were funded by the RSL members and the Institute Trust and much of the fittings and furniture were donated by the residents of Geraldton. The building is constructed from Cardup pressed bricks from the Bootenal Brickworks and was named after Field Marshall Sir William Birdwood.3 The design for the laying out of the grounds was prepared by Mr. W. P. Edwards and included plantings and a fountain. A seed from a lone pine at Gallipoli was planted but did not survive.4 On Sunday 1st September 1935 the War Memorial was unveiled by his Excellency the Lieutenant Governor, Sir James Mitchell, while the State President of the RSL, Mr. A. Yeates, performed the official opening of Birdwood House.5

The Geraldton Customs Complex is a fine example of regional Art Deco architecture comprising a group of three principal buildings related in function and contemporary in their period of construction. The buildings are well maintained and continue to be used for their original purpose demonstrating aesthetic, historical and social significance. Aesthetic Value: The Geraldton Customs Complex is a fine example ofregional Art Deco architecture with the Customs Hall being representative of the style as applied to small Institutional buildings and the residence being a fine example of a well built suburban house of the period . The Complex has considerable aesthetic merit for the coherent nature and sophisticated quality of the architecture which appropriately reflects its official status. Historic value: The place represents the historical importance of the Port of Geraldton as a major regional centre in the WA wheatbelt reflecting the growth of primary and secondary industries in and around Geraldton in the 1920s and 1930s as well as the important role of the port in the development of the region . The place was also a primary base for Australian Naval operations in the region during World War IIand currently houses historic photographs and mementos of this role. Social value: Socially, the Austral ian Customs involvement in the Port activity has been of importance to the business community and of interest to locals and the wider community. The place has sentimental importance, especially because of its involvement in the investigation of the sinking of HMAS Perth, for former naval staff and families as well as former Customs and Excise staff. Scientific value: The place has demonstrable potential to yield information that will contribute to an understanding of the cultural history of Western Australia and of the role of the customs and excise service. Rarity: The Complex is uncommon as it is one of only a very few such establishments and represents a group of Customs related activities that continue to be used for their original purpose and in original buildings from the 1930s. It is also one of only a few such Art Deco Institutional buildings. Representativeness: The Complex is representative of rural Institutional architecture of the period and also of other regional customs facilities built in Australia . Authenticity : Most of the building fabric is in a state that compares closely to its original condition. The most significant changes are the extension of the Customs House to join with the King's Warehouse, changes of colour schemes externally and internally and changes to internal furnishings which do not detract from the authenticity of its original state. The buildings are in good condition, being regularly maintained. The only fabric problem evident is some blistering of paintwork and surface rust on the roof of the King's Warehouse. Integrity: Having been used continuously as a customs facility since it was built, the Complex has a high degree of integrity. Few changes have been made to the building fabric or design which would affect the place's significant qualities.
The Geraldton Customs Complex comprises three buildings; an office building (Customs House), Bond Store (King's Warehouse) and residence (Sub-Collector's Residence). All three buildings have boxed eaves, double leaf brick walls, externally rendered and painted cream and double hung sash windows. A degree of consistency exists in the scale, massing and external detailing, giving the complex a unified appearance. The Customs House, which is a long narrow building with a small frontage, has a formal symmetrical fascade built right on the street boundary in Inter-War Art Deco style' giving it prominence in an otherwise mainly residential street adjacent to the port. The central entrance is approached by four graduated cement steps and is emphasised by protruding stepped rendered architraves creating a vestigial 'stripped classical'2 portico with the double entry doors recessed into a small porch. Over the doors is a fanlight with mullions in a 'Union Jack' motif and the portico is surmounted by a central classical shell motif. A double-hung sash window on either side of the entry features margin glazing and overhead a stepped parapet supporting a flagpole screens the tiled roof gable. The King's Warehouse at the rear of the Customs House is a plain, utilitarian structure of brick walls and a corrugated iron hipped roof. Access is through double doors in the west wall positioned to facilitate loading, as well as through a doorway leading from the Customs House passage linking the two buildings. The Residence has brick walls and a Marseilles pattern t.c. tiled roof and an enclosed porch with large arched openings. The well built structure is a good example of the architectural style described as Inter War Mediterranean 3 similar to houses found around that time in Perth suburbs. It is thoroughly domestic in appearance and has three bedrooms, dining room, lounge room, kitchen and bathroom.
Assessment 2000 Construction 1935/36 Alterations/additions 1959 (major repairs); 1979 Customs House and King's Warehouse joined by an extension to Customs house. Architect: Drawings prepared by Commonwealth Department of Works. Building contract awarded to T P Cruthers Geraldton was declared a Port Town in I850 and by I879 it became the main shipping point for the export of wheat, wool and minerals from the Victoria District and the area north of Northampton. The first customs facility was established c.1865 in Gregory Street. From 1929 to 1935 customs operated from the Geraldton Public Office Building in Marine Terrace. By 1930 Geraldton had become a booming Port Town. The construction of three new berths, the establishment of the new Shell plant and increased exports added weight to the argument to improve customs facilities at the Port. The new Geraldton Customs Complex was established by the Commonwealth Government in 1935/36, located to allow control of the Port, harbour and railway sidings. Throughout the Second World War the Customs House was used by the Navy as its primary base in the region. The King's Warehouse was used for investigating the disappearance of HMAS Sydney in 1941. The Sub-Collector interviewed survivors of the German 'raider' Kormoran believed to be involved in the loss of the Sydney. Relics of the history of the facility are currently displayed throughout the buildings including photographs, plaques, the original counter, and a piece of the wreckage of the Stanford mounted over the fireplace, as Customs were involved in its salvage.4
